The M/Other of Patriarchal-Capitalism

Capital’s drive to diminish industrial labor inputs to absolute zero while infinitely accumulating value from itself alone through financial speculation can be seen as a real historical instantiation of an ancient patriarchal dream of transcending the flesh by appealing to the mind’s supposed innate affiliation with the divine order (“logos” or “dharma”).

The separation of the spheres of reproduction and production, of manual and intellectual labor, of living labor and dead labor, that is structurally necessary in the system of generalized commodity production is a refraction of the mind-body dualism that is implicit (and the masculine over feminine domination that is explicit) in that primeval patriarchal dream of transcendence.

Therefore in the last analysis, it can be said that the process of capitalization and patriarchal transcendence (both involving forms of self-valorizing value) both extract, exploit and expel the same basic thing: the transcendental condition of the genesis of all experience, which, while being prior to and always exceeding the bifurcation of mind and body, is closer to the soma than it is to the psyche, since it is within the patriarchal-capitalist psyche that the split occurs and is maintained.

This transcendental condition is essentially patriarchal-capitalism’s M/Other, that which it genetically originates from yet occupies a position of alterity to it. It is the power of difference unbound by identity and judgements of sameness, a “pure difference,” or an emptiness that is at once luminous, a “luminous emptiness,” or an unalienated laboring activity, a “free activity,” that is both the reason for the being of patriarchal-capitalism and the reason for its non-being as well. To the extent that the very being of patriarchal-capitalism depends on its ignorance of its own transcendental condition, to that extent it is doomed to non-being because it cannot sustainably operate without a reciprocal relationship with its own ground, its ultimate means of sustenance.

So if patriarchal-capitalism never had a real reason for being, why does it seem like it arose in the first place? We can say in hindsight that once it emerged, we were forced (out of sheer necessity) to reckon with the conditions of its genesis, its maintenance, and its dissolution. This process reveals for us the essence, nature and power of its M/Other, which we come to realize is our own M/Other as well. Achieving freedom from patriarchal-capitalism necessarily requires us to recognize the essence, integrate with the nature and exercise the power of our Great M/Other through our own embodied experiences and interactions with each other. So perhaps the generation and completion of patriarchal-capitalism is a merely a momentary aspect of M/Other’s own automatic functioning, through which she involves herself in our lives and evolves with and through us.
